It was what he said, and how he said it that made me smile. After spending the morning serving and praying with the dozens of people waiting in line to get help at Crisis Assistance Ministries, Bruce Bloomquist said, “I really think we CAN change the world.”
Bloomquist leads an Elevation Church eGroup he calls “Love Year.” Every first Friday of the month, all year long, the team serves biscuits, other snacks and drinks to the clients waiting in line to get help with rent and utilities payments.
Bloomquist lights up when he starts recounting the things God has done in that line at CAM. Last month he prayed with a man who wanted to seek God’s forgiveness and invite Christ into his life. It happened again today. My boys and I were handing out doughnut holes to the children in line when I overheard him praying – and guiding the woman who asked for prayer to join them and add her own words while they gave thanks to God together. It was an honor to be there and witness our creator’s love working through his people.
And I might have missed the whole thing. If you’re a mother of young children, you may have struggled like I have with finding just the right service opportunity to do together as a family. It’s never perfect. I didn’t get to pray with anyone because my boys needed most of my attention. We were late. My youngest requested in desperation a bathroom break on the way downtown. And we had to leave early because he needed another bathroom break while I was talking to a woman in line.
But here’s the thing. Joyce Meyer says “Strive for excellence, not perfection, because we don’t live in a perfect world.” There are no perfect situations or people, either. And while we search and seek and wait for that perfect service opportunity – somebody’s waiting in line right now, for your help. Someone needs food, water, friendship, fellowship – now.
Bruce Bloomquist and people just like you are already changing the world. But they’re not doing it from the comfort of their living rooms. In the coming weeks, Elevation Church is offering many opportunities to serve our city through the Orange Initiative.
We’ve partnered with excellent organizations all over the Charlotte area in efforts to eradicate homelessness, invest in our schools, teachers, and students, and improve the quality of life for all people in our city. Seek excellence, not perfection – and let God work through you to make a difference in someone’s life.
